When you work from home like I do, sometimes it’s easy to feel a little lost in your own world if you don’t find yourself actually leaving the house for several days on end. It’s during times like these that occasionally you just need an hour of rocking out in the car with nobody to watch you belting out songs but the other faceless drivers on the road…
Tonight was a night like this!
Eve 6’s debut album to me is one of those classic alternative rock albums that was big during a very pivotal time in my life. It came out during my senior year of high school, and it got a lot of play in my car in the several years to come when I would commute back and forth to college – still in Northern Michigan – as I struggled to figure out what I was supposed to be doing with my life.
The song Small Town Trap in particular very much rang home as I constantly sang those words “with dreams of breaking out” with the sincerity of someone who wanted to move away from home but didn’t quite have it in him to do so just yet…
So instead this album became one of several personal anthems that would help nudge me through the days when I would literally be on the road more than anything else between driving back and forth to school and driving deliveries for work with no end in sight. Sometimes when I would drive downstate either to fill in on a truck run when I was missing a driver or when I would go to a concert or comedy show, I would fantasize about staying on those highways instead of getting off in Grand Rapids or Detroit, with the Sunshine State far off on the horizon as my final destination … but it would still be a few years before I finally had the courage to make that dream a reality.
